German energy strategy under threat from EU “paradigm shift”

The German Energiewende is running up against a “paradigm shift” in EU energy policy, which seems on the point of slowing down the transformation towards a low-carbon economy. As Germany cannot afford to continue with the Energiewende on its own, the German government will have to do its utmost to bend EU energy policy in its direction, write Oliver Geden and Severin Fischer of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).

Corporate capture of Danish energy undermines climate law

The sale of a substantial stake in the Danish state-owned power company, DONG Energy, to the U.S. based investment bank Goldman Sachs sets a discouraging tone for the country's fledgling climate law, according to NOAH Friends of the Earth Denmark.

The sale of 19% of DONG Energy to Goldman Sachs was opposed by nearly 70% of the Danish population, and led to the departure of the Socialist People's Party (SPP) from the coalition government. The deal threatens Denmark's green incentives, giving Goldman Sachs's primary interest in profits influence over Danish energy politics.

Ethical Investors required to join NI renewable energy cooperative

Northern Ireland’s only wind energy cooperative, Drumlin Wind Energy today (4th March) launched its second public share offer. In 2012 the cooperative raised £2.7m to build 4 turbines across Northern Ireland and this year is seeking to raise a further £1.2m to construct two more community owned and managed turbines at Ballyclare, Co. Antrim and Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh. The share offer is only open until 30th April, 2014.

Community energy supporters from across Scotland gathered on 5th March 2014 in Glasgow’s George Square to form a human, spinning windmill to mark the launch of a new coalition.

Small renewables, CHP plants get support in Poland

Some PLN600m (€143m) has been earmarked for small renewable energy installations in Poland. The funding will come from a new programme called Prosument, which is a subset of the country’s environmental fund NFOSiGW.

Projects eligible for funding will include biomass installations of up to 300 kilowatt watt thermal, heat pumps as well as PV, wind, and solar installations with capacity of up to 40kW. Their cost must range between €23,000 and €107,000.


200 European cities and regions call for more ambitious EU climate and energy targets

ICLEI members are among 200 European cities and regions calling on the European Union to place ambitious and binding targets at the heart of its 2030 Climate and Energy Package, which is currently under negotiation. In a call for action authored jointly by ICLEI and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), local and regional governments underline their eagerness to implement a sustainable, socially just and ecologically sound energy strategy. They ask the EU to support them with strong targets and support, which will help shelter future generations from the worst effects of climate change.
